Beyond Conflict has created powerful and innovative frameworks to open pathways for progress in peace talks, transitions to democracy, and national reconciliation in the aftermath of division and violence in over 75 countries.

Our Story: A meeting Place for Science and Practice

Founded in 1992, our core belief has always been that people can overcome deep-seated conflict, injustice, and oppression.

Since then, Beyond Conflict has opened pathways for progress in over 75 countries to advance peace, reconciliation, and social change. Partnered with a global network of leaders, activists and other seasoned practitioners, we facilitated the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in post-apartheid South Africa, and charted a course towards peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland, Central America, Cuba and other divided societies.

As the scientific understanding of how the human brain processes conflict evolved over time, so did we. We brought in brain and behavioral scientists at the leading edge of the search for new solutions, and built a methodology to combine scientific insights with deep experience of conflict.

Now, Beyond Conflict is the world’s leading organization applying brain and behavioral science to move beyond conflict an injustice throughout the world.

Beyond Conflict is hopeful and pragmatic as it presents creative solutions, and honest in its acknowledgment of the difficulties in implementing them. An engaging book from an organization with an important, hopeful story to share.”

Preventing Identity-based Violence

How people think — not just what they think — can shape pro- or anti-social intergroup behaviors during conflict. Through collaboration between peacebuilders and social and behavioral scientists, we weave this learning into designing evidenced-based innovations that improve attitudes and behaviors between conflicting groups.

Strengthening Democracy

Democracy is under threat, but how far we allow democratic norms to erode depends on psychological drivers that science is just beginning to explore. We use novel approaches to secure the legitimacy of democratic norms, strengthen movements for social change, and address identity-based polarization.

Promoting Psychological and Social Repair

Trauma and chronic stress are underrecognized influences on community and political violence through their effects on individual neurobiology, intergroup perceptions, and cultural and political norms. We design, test, and scale trauma-informed approaches to conflict resolution, social cohesion, and mitigating violent extremism.

For more than 30 years, Beyond Conflict has received support from foundations, corporations, individuals, and governments committed to addressing the root causes and consequences of conflict. These generous supporters share our belief that the application of conflict resolution experience coupled with brain and behavioral science can be a powerful and transformative combination for peace.
