Beyond Conflict Awarded $100,000 to Address the Racial Wealth Divide in Boston

Boston, MA. – Beyond Conflict is one of 100 Massachusetts non-profits to receive a grant of $100,000 through the Cummings Foundation’s “$100K for 100” program. Chosen from a total of 574 applicants, Beyond Conflict aims to understand and correct the psychological misperceptions behind the racial wealth divide.

“We are deeply grateful to the Cummings Foundation for this generous grant,” said Beyond Conflict Founder & CEO, Tim Phillips. “We look forward to working closely with the many organizations and individuals who have been focusing on the racial wealth divide in the City of Boston.”

Together with local partners, Beyond Conflict will use the funds to further understand and correct the psychological misperceptions behind the racial wealth divide. “Misperceptions of this divide, particularly by those in positions of power and privilege, are a barrier preventing solutions to wealth inequality”, said Beyond Conflict senior advisor, Ceasar McDowell, also a professor at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

At the end of the two-year grant, Beyond Conflict will have produced a first-of-its-kind, scientific report and action plan to measurably reduce the misperceptions about the wealth divide in Boston. The findings will be shared with local partners, the media, and policymakers.

“By having such a local focus, we aim to make a meaningful positive difference in the communities where our colleagues and leasing clients live and work,” said Joel Swets, Cummings Foundation’s executive director. “We are most grateful for the nonprofit organizations that assist and empower our neighbors, and we are proud to support their efforts.”

This year’s grant recipients represent a variety of causes, including homelessness prevention, affordable housing, education, violence prevention, and food insecurity.
